Poland

History and culture despite all

Poland has a strong identity: think of music (Chopin but also Szymanowski and Penderecki), literature (Potocki and the wonderful "The Manuscript Found
in Saragossa" or Borowski and the upsetting "This Way for the Gas, Ladies and Gentlemen"), and of the role of Solidarność and Pope John Paul II in the late 20th Century.
Some people belittle Warszawa, but I was really moved by the way Poles rebuilt the heart of their capital.
